AI is Trained by Average Data: Why Your Brand Needs a Human-in-the-Loop

Hi, Rachel here.
Here's something to think about.
We are currently living in a content gold rush; it's crazy. AI tools have made it possible to spin up blog posts, social media updates, and newsletters in mere seconds. It feels like magic. But if you look closely at the output, you might notice a subtle, unsettling pattern: it all sounds… fine.
Search engines will think it’s fine, and you and your brand don’t want to be fine. You want to stand out and be seen.
It is grammatically correct. It is structurally sound. But it is sometimes profoundly unremarkable or soulless.
If you are using AI to build your brand, you are inadvertently hitting a ceiling of mediocrity. Here is why AI produces "average" content and why bringing a human-in-the-loop is the only way to protect your brand’s competitive advantage.
The Problem: Prediction vs. Creation
To understand the risk, you have to understand how Large Language Models (LLMs) function. They are not thinking machines; they are probabilistic prediction engines.
They are trained on a massive dataset representing the total of the internet’s public output. It's impressive.
When you prompt an AI, it calculates the most likely sequence of words that should follow your query based on that training data. It’s smart, but it may not be the best fit for your brand because you don't want to get lost in the noise.
In other words, AI is designed to calculate the statistical average of human communication.
If you ask an AI to write a blog post about "the future of marketing," it will look at the thousands of existing posts on that topic and synthesise them into a standard, middle-of-the-road response. It is mathematically engineered to avoid extremes, avoid radical creativity, and avoid the jagged edges of opinion that make a brand memorable. You should aim to make your brand memorable.
The Risk: The Sea of Sameness
For your brand, "average" is the enemy. Slightly dramatic, but it's true.
If your marketing sounds like the statistical average of your industry, you aren’t standing out - you are blending in. You become white noise. When a potential client reads your content, they aren't finding a voice that resonates with their specific problems; they are reading content that feels like every other generic newsletter they’ve received that morning. I'm guilty of not reading all the newsletters that I get sent.
The risks are twofold:
Diminishing Returns: As more brands lean on AI-only content, the internet becomes saturated with generic copy. Audiences are already developing "AI blindness" - the ability to instantly tune out content that lacks a human spark.
Loss of Authority: Google’s search algorithms, specifically under their E-E-A-T (Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, and Trustworthiness) framework, are increasingly good at identifying and discounting low-value, derivative content. If you aren't adding a unique perspective, you aren't providing value. You need to put your stamp on it and show your value. Hey Google, look at me!
The Solution: The Human-in-the-Loop - me:)
This is where the "Human-in-the-Loop" (HITL) methodology becomes your secret weapon.
"Human-in-the-loop" doesn't mean manually writing every word. It means using AI for what it is best at (structuring, summarising, and brainstorming) while retaining the human element for what only we can do: strategy, nuance, and empathy.
As an AI-assisted copywriter, my process ensures your content is never just the "average" result - hopefully:)
Context Injection: I feed the AI your specific brand history, proprietary data, and unique insights that aren't available on the open web.
Editorial Rigour: I review the AI’s output to strip away its generic tendencies - its love for filler words, overused clichés, and "robotic" transitions. Or facts that simply aren't true.
The "Human Overlay": I inject the emotional stakes and professional anecdotes that actually build trust.
Don’t Outsource Your Strategy
The goal of your marketing is to build a relationship, and relationships require two things: authenticity and consistency.
By keeping a human-in-the-loop, you get the best of both worlds: the speed and efficiency of the digital age, and the soul and strategy of a human partner.
That's all I have to write about it for now. Thanks for reading.
Rachel:)
